400 series Buccaneer - a major new miniature sealed connector system
Joining Bulgin's renowned family of 'Buccaneer' sealed plastic connectors, the new 400 Series is the smallest in the range with an overall diameter of just over 19mm, and, like others in the family, offers true waterproof sealing to IP68.
Although small in size the 400 series is packed with specification. Multiple pole connections, from two up to twelve way, have been chosen to offer the maximum number of configurations; the 2 and 3 pole are rated at 8A, 250V, the 4, 6 and 8 pole 5A, 125V and the 10 and 12 pole at 1A, 50V. Using high quality gold plated crimp and solder contact pins, contact resistance is less than 5m ohm and therefore suitable for signal and power applications. Even within such a small connector, contact engagement is over 2.5mm to maintain electrical integrity and enhance the long term reliability of the connector.
The secure cable sealing system uses the tried and tested method offered by compressive collet, cable gland and retaining nut which can be found on far more costly metal connectors. Separate colour coded cable glands are used to provide sealing on cable diameters ranging from 3.5 to 7mm. As well as reliable sealing this design also produces exceptionally strong cable retention at over 80 Newtons.
Moulded in a tough flame retardant V-0 rated Nylon, the three body styles - flex, flex in-line and panel mounting - are each available with plug or socket contacts allowing cable to cable and cable to panel connection in either configuration, so, for example, an inlet and outlet connection with the same number of ways could be used on a single panel. The connector faces are 'scoop proof' so any mis-mating will not damage the contacts and, in addition sealing caps are available to maintain the IP rating of unmated connectors.
Designed to meet UL, CSA and VDE electrical approvals the 400 Series Buccaneer provides a much lower cost alternative to comparable Mil spec connectors, in addition the tough corrosion resistant bodies can be an added advantage where continuously subjected to damp or wet conditions.
For applications where a cost effective, environmentally sealed connector solution is required and space is at a premium, Bulgin's 400 series will give performance well beyond it's diminutive size.
